Course 1: Using Lines

In this course, you will learn how to use lines with constraints. You will be able to create objects such as:

First start MINOS and create the current view. For that you need to change the current view into a front view. Go to the [View Management] [Create Immediate View] [Front] menu.

To create straight lines, use the [Lines] [Segment Placement] menu.
  • Define the horizontal base segment through the [Create a segment with 2 point] menu. For the horizontal segment, type [N] for numerical coordinates, and enter "X0,Y0,Z-30" and "DY10". The segment is created. For the vertical segment, type [N], then enter "X0,Y-30,Z0" and "DZ10". The segment is created.
  • Create the parallel segments. Select the [Create a segment parallel to another] menu. Locate the horizontal segment, click on the top of the view to indicate the position, and enter the distance by typing "60". Locate the vertical segment, click on the right of the view, and enter "40". The parallel segments are created.
  • Then, you need to define a segment with an angle. Select the [Create a segment tangent to a circle with an angle] menu. Select the [Passing thru constraint] button at the bottom of the screen, and [Passing Thru Intersection] near it. Then, click on the intersection of the two segments. For the angle, enter "70" for 70 degrees. The segment is created.

  • All the segments are created !
  • To create circles, you need to create constraints like these.
The first circle, must be defined at the intersection of two segments and tangent to another. Therefore, select the [Lines] [Circle Placement] [Create a circle with center and a point] menu.

For the center, select the [At the intersection of two lines] yellow button at the bottom of the screen. And pick the first and the second segment.

For the point, select the [Tangency constraint] button at the bottom of the screen and select the segment with an angle. The circle tangent to this line is created.

You need to create fillets. Then, select the [Lines] [Circle Placement] [Create a circle tangent to 2 elements with radius] menu.
  • Create a first circle tangent to the circle and the upper horizontal segment. For that, select the [Tangency Constraint] button at the bottom of the screen. And click the circle and the segment. Enter the radius by typing "5". Note that the result depends on the position of the click.
  • Proceed in the same way for the other circles.
  • You will now use a very powerful function of MINOS: The Contour Function

Select the [Lines] [Create a complex string with support elements] menu. Now, you can create the "Contour" by clicking a way on the segments and the circles. Note the different results according to your choice. Each time you are lost, you can push the [Delete] key to step back. When you are on the first element, you can click on [OK] to close the contour.

Erase all the construction lines by using the [Display Last Element] menu at the lower right side of the screen.

You are now ready to create a solid.
  • You need for that to change the current view into an axonometric view. Go to the [View Management] [Create Immediate View] [Axonometric] menu.
  • Go to the [Solid and surface placement] [Create a cylinder] menu.
  • Select the contour. Create an edge vector by clicking on an arbitrary point, and entering the coordinate by [N] for numerical coordinates, and enter "DX20" to define the translation vector.
  • Are you ready to do this now ?
